Look at the whole child

Temperature is only one part of the assessment. Activity level, breathing, hydration, alertness and the presence of concerning symptoms are important.

Hydration and comfort

Offer appropriate fluids and allow the child to rest. Follow age-appropriate medical advice for fever medicines rather than using adult dosing assumptions.

Seek urgent care when needed

Urgent medical assessment is appropriate for very young infants with fever, breathing difficulty, unusual drowsiness, seizures, severe dehydration, a non-blanching rash or other serious symptoms.

When unsure

Parents and caregivers should contact a qualified healthcare professional when they are concerned or symptoms are worsening.
